This boosts the child’s immune system providing protection against illnesses and conditions such as allergies, certain child cancers, type 2 diabetes among others.

You are probably wondering what about me? Well, breastfeeding also has a lot of physical and emotional benefits to you too as the mother. Through breastfeeding, you have reduced postpartum depression and increased connection with your child. Did you know that it also promotes weight loss after birth? Well, it does, the process burns upto 500 calories a day to build and maintain milk supply. Therefore, as difficult as it may seem it is actually beneficial  to both you as the mother and your child in the long run.

Myths around Breastfeeding.

From all the information sources around you concerning breastfeeding there will be a lot of myths and misconceptions, we want to help you by demystifying them. Here are some of the myths that you will come across:

1. Breastfeeding should come naturally

As earlier mentioned, you will be told that breastfeeding is a natural process to a mother, but one thing to note is that breastfeeding is a learned skill that requires patience and perseverance. It will get frustrating from time to time but then it will get easier with time and professional help, that is why we are here for you every step of the way.

2. The size of the breasts matter

Milk production is based entirely on breast tissue and not on breast size which is dependent on fat in one’s body. Therefore, whether you have small or large breasts it doesn’t determine the scale of milk production.

3. Nipple pain is inevitable.

Yes, nipple pain is common but it is not ‘normal’. It is common to experience pain during the first few days of nursing your child but this is set to disappear over time. However, if you continue to experience discomfort and dread breastfeeding then there might be a problem. Through our lactation consultant we can help you improve your position and work on  a painless latch.

4. You can’t take medication while breastfeeding

While it is true that some medications are unsafe during the breastfeeding process, with the right and credible information  from our lactation consultant we can help you get safer substitutes for the medication. However, if it is really essential to take the medication, you can pump and discard the milk, then take the medication and resume breastfeeding after completing the dosage.
